The Bunny Hill

by Tessa Dean November 2020

Anna stared down the bunny hill at the children skiing. She felt stupid being relegated to the bunny hill at 41 years old. What must those little children think? All grown up and unable to ski down a little hill.

Anna was terrified if truth be told. She couldn’t get herself to shove off and glide down the hill. The children made it look so easy.

Just then, a kid came by and gave Anna a shove, and she started down the hill, legs and arms flailing. The bump at the bottom gave her a cast to remember this trip.

100 Years and Counting

By Tessa Dean November 2020

Myrtle sadly left her granddaughter’s home. Today was her birthday and although they served her favorite dinner, which they did every Sunday, today was like any other day. She left the house, trying not to let the tears show. How could they have forgotten her birthday. Today she was 100 years old and in perfect health.

Her grandson William walked her home, guiding her with her arm in the crook of his elbow. She felt like grabbing it back and storming off. It was only a few blocks so she could handle it on her own.

However, she had been taught not to be rude and so she left her arm where it was and continued up the street to her house.

In the side yard she saw something flickering between the trees. It was dark except for that small flickering light. William guided her to the side yard.

“Surprise,” everyone yelled. Myrtle looked around and saw shadows stepping out of the trees. On the picnic table was a cupcake with one lit candle. A light was turned on and the area was well lit now. She could see her family and all the different birthday cakes they knew she liked appeared on the table next to the cupcake, including a tray of cupcakes for the children.

Now Myrtle allowed the tears to flow. “I love you guys,” she mumbled through her tears. And here she thought they had all forgotten.

Her granddaughter said, “I bet you thought we had forgotten, but you know Nana we would never forget your birthday and today you are 100 years old. What a special day and we wanted to surprise you.” She hugged her grandmother tight.
