Rose Lynn’s Unexpected Trip

By Tessa Dean January 2021

Rose Lynn stared down the tracks looking for a sign that the train was arriving. She was holding her mama’s hand and excitement had her bouncing all around.

“Rose Lynn, please stop fidgeting. Stand still and wait quietly. Daddy will be here any time now.

As the time of arrival came closer the people started gathering to wait for their loved ones and there was pushing and shoving as they tried to move to the front of the line closest to where the doors would open.

Before she knew what had happened Rose Lynn’s hand was torn from her mother’s and she was pushed into the crowd of people waiting to board for the next station.

The train arrived and the doors opened, people spilling out while others shoved to get on for when the train left on its next part of the journey.

Rose Lynn didn’t see her mommy or her daddy. She was just shoved along with the crowd and before she knew the train whistle blew and the train started moving and she was on the inside with strangers and not with her parents.

She started crying as the people scrambled for seats. A nice man in a uniform who said he was the conductor asked her what was wrong.

“I can’t find my mommy and daddy. I wasn’t supposed to get on the train. Daddy was getting off of it. I’m scared.”

“What is your name young lady and I will call the station and let them know what happened and tell them what station to go to find you. I am sure your mommy and daddy are frantic right now and looking for you. I will take you to the office and you will wait there with someone to make sure you find your parents. OK?”

Rose Lynn nodded with tears running down her cheeks. “Honey, I need your name.”

“Rose Lynn Michaels,” she managed to tell him through her tears.

“Ok Rose Lynn, come with me to the front of the train and we will make that call. You will see your parents in no time as I am sure they are frantically trying to find you themselves.”

Rose Lynn followed the conductor to the front of the train and he quickly explained what happened and the call was put through to the station they had just left. Rose Lynn’s parents were already at the office and were relieved when the call came through letting them know where to go to pick her up.

When the train pulled into the station, the conductor escorted her to the office and introduced her to Sadie, one of the women who worked in the office. He told her the story and she took Rose Lynn’s hand in hers and said, “I will get you to your mommy and daddy as soon as they arrive.”

It wasn’t long before a young couple came running into the office shouting for Rose Lynn. Sadie said, “I bet that is your mommy and daddy now, honey.”

Rose Lynn turned and yelled, “Mommy and Daddy, here I am, see?”

Rosie and Wayne Michaels turned at the voice of their daughter and smiled. They gathered her into a big hug and turned to thank Sadie for watching out for their daughter. She explained that the conductor did the hard part all she did was hold her hand for a few minutes until they arrived. They asked Sadie to thank the conductor for them and asked for his name so they could notify the train company of their wonderful, caring employees.
