Christmas Eve Dinner

By Tessa Dean December 2022

Little Johnny stood outside the window peering in at a Christmas feast for Christmas Eve. Tears ran down his cheeks as he beheld the feast before him. This was his first Christmas without a feast of his own, as his family had all died in a car accident the day before.

He hadn’t been with them as he had been playing with his friend, Mark, and came home to find the cops at his house. They were looking for him from what they were saying, but no one knew where he was, and he kept it that way. He didn’t want to go to a group home or be put with another family.

He put his head down on the window sill and dreamed of Christmases past. They always celebrated this way too. He fell asleep, and the tears froze on his cheeks.

“Son? Hey sonny,” the old man said. “Do you want to come in and join us? You look frozen. What are you doing out here? Are you the little boy they are searching for?”

He tried to run, but the man had a grip on him. The man urged him to come inside and eat. He would deal with the boy later.

Johnny relaxed at the man’s kind words and went inside to join the feast. “Johnny, what are you doing here? We heard about your family and are so sorry. Here, sit by the fire and get warm. We’ll talk to child protective services after dinner, but for now, you are welcome to eat and get warm,” his friend’s mother said after seeing who her dad had brought in. They had all seen the child outside the window.

As promised, they called child protective services after dinner. Since there was no room anywhere for another child, Mark’s parents offered to let him stay there with them indefinitely. They talked late into the night after the boys went to bed, and they were willing to adopt Johnny into their family. He was a well-behaved boy, and Mark absolutely loved him. Plans were put into action to start the proceedings for permanent placement. Right now, he at least had a home. They arranged to try and find Johnny’s gifts from his home so he would have something from Santa in the morning. Nothing would replace his family, but they would do their best to make his Christmas as special as possible. The police took the parents over to Johnny’s home, and along with Child Protective Services, they searched for his gifts. They found a few things for the child but not much for any of his brothers and sister either. Johnny’s family was poor, so they hustled to a 24-hour store, bought some stuff, wrapped it, and put it under the tree so he would have gifts in the morning.

Eventually, the adoption went through, and Johnny was permanently settled into his new home with understanding parents that loved him as much as their own children.

Christmas Display

By Tessa Dean December 2022

The museum went all out to decorate for the holidays. This year the focus was on a shiny bright carriage. Gifts were stacked all around it, and an elf read out a poem dealing with the different holidays being celebrated every hour on the hour. The display was admired by many who visited the museum for the holidays.

A guard stood nearby as there were no ropes to keep the people from touching the display. One small child crawled through the legs and unwrapped one of the gifts. They soon put ropes around the display and hired more guards so it wouldn’t happen again.

Foggy Morning!

By Tessa Dean November 2022

It was a foggy morning, and a quick peek out of the tent showed that visibility was very low. We slowly dressed and climbed out to start breakfast and looked around our tent. It was hard to see just a few away due to the fog.

Suddenly Sandra yelled that she could see deer in the next copse of trees. We crowded around her and looked at where she pointed. Sandra was sure they were reindeer and was very excited, and she wanted to go over to them. We tried to explain to her that if we were to approach them, they would most likely take off. They were afraid of us.

She didn’t care she just wanted to see them up close. We walked as slowly and quietly as possible, but we only got a little closer before they bolted in all directions. Sandra was disappointed and started to cry. As we stood there comforting her, one of them returned and started to graze again, and the rest soon followed. We were closer than we had been, so she got a much better look at them and was finally consoled enough to stop crying and just watch them from where we were.

Today we were doing ceramics, and the object we were painting was a squirrel. We happened to be painting in the backyard at the picnic table, and a squirrel was visiting. What luck! He was just sitting on the fence. We had something to use as a model.

A New Home!

By Tessa Dean November 2022

We were scouring the sand for conch shells on the Caribbean Sea beach in the Bahamas. We knew that giant marine hermit crabs would attack a conch, and that way, they had a meal and a shell to live in. We found a conch shell with a hermit crab living in it, but we found out at the airport that we could not take a conch shell out of the country.

Farming Ain’t For Me!

By Tessa Dean November 2022

“Ouch!” I grabbed my toes and massaged them. “Dammit, why must I trip over the bed frame every morning when I get up. I know it is there, for heaven’s sake,” I yell at my still-sleeping spouse. “Why did I let you talk me into buying this farm? I am not a farmer, I hate early mornings, and it is a lot of work.”

“Russell, why must you do this every morning? I don’t have to be up for hours, and you wake me up every morning screaming at yourself for something you surely can learn to avoid. How many times do you have to stub your toes before you remember to step away from the bed before walking?”

“Ahh, easy for you to say, Lisa, as you are more awake when you get up. I have to be up before the sun rises, and I am still asleep as I get wakened up by the baby crying most of the night. You finally go back to sleep after you finally get her settled, and therefore, you aren’t so tired. Try keeping my hours and see how you deal with the morning. Plus, it is dark in the bedroom, so you can sleep. I try not to wake you up too, but my poor toes.”

“Russell, at least you aren’t getting up and taking care of the baby during the night. I try to get to her as quick as possible. I hear her stirring with the baby monitor so I can get to her faster.”

“It would help if you would turn it off after you get to the room. I lie here listening to you two the whole time through the monitor.”

I look out the window and see by the lights out by the barns that it is a foggy morning again. I can’t see the tractor at all, but then most nights, I put it in the barn, so I shouldn’t see it.

I am slightly more awake by the time I eat and get ready to go to the barn, but I thought I left the tractor outside last night. So where was it? Puzzled, I head to the barn. It was not in there. I head out to the fields, where it is in the distance, all but invisible due to the fog. I have no idea why I left the tractor out in the fields. I vaguely remember getting off the tractor to take a wandering sheep back to its pen, and I must have decided to quit for the night and just left the tractor there. Farming is definitely not for me.

Lazy Days

By Tessa Dean October 2022

Even though the rainy weather finally dried up, there was a fine haze this morning, and in the distance, the fog almost blanked out the trees that hung over the river where Christopher and John were fishing. The fog and haze didn’t affect their fishing, so they hung in there, hoping for the sunny day that had been predicted for later in the afternoon.

John caught a fish, and as he held it up to show Christopher, he noticed the trees were more defined as the fog started to burn off due to the sun finally coming out. Christopher told John the fish was too small to keep, and he had to throw it back. John argued about it briefly, but Christopher pulled out the ruler and showed him it was too small to keep.

The next fish John caught, there was no doubt that it was large enough to keep. In fact, it was probably one of the largest ones they had caught on this river.

By now, the fog was completely burned off, and the sunny skies were bright blue. Beautiful weather for fishing. They decided to continue fishing for a while, as Christopher had yet to catch a fish, which wouldn’t do. These two guys were always in competition with each other.

Monster’s Bash

By Tessa Dean October 2022

“You first,” Peter pushed Davey towards the building with gargoyles along the top.

Davey replied, “No!” and pushed back at Peter. “You go first!”

Neither wanted to be first, and they kept shoving each other.

“It’s a party, stupid. There’s nothing to be afraid of,” Peter told Davey after another push.

Finally, they followed two of their friends into the building. As they crossed the threshold, the door slammed shut behind them, but no one was there with them to slam the door. They tried to open the door, but it was stuck shut.
