Puppies!

By Tessa Dean May 2024

Our black Labrador Retriever mix was pregnant with her first litter of puppies. We waited anxiously as she was quite large. The moment finally came and she pushed out the first puppy. Hours later she was surrounded by 10 puppies all trying to nurse and pushing each other out of the way.

Whoever she had mated with had long hair so some of the puppies were long-haired and some looked like her with the short hairs.

We built a fenced in area for all 11 dogs and started advertising free puppies once they were old enough to be weaned off the mother. We had people offering to take the puppies and we decided to keep one of the long haired ones for ourselves.

Once they were gone and peace reigned again, we still had the fenced in area up. One night there was a commotion from the mom and her pup. It wasn’t til the next morning that we figured out what the problem was. Someone had brought one of the puppies back and stuck it into the fenced in area. We had no idea who it was that brought theirs back since we didn’t know the people who had taken them.

We had to advertise again for someone to take that puppy, Eventually they all found homes. This was the one and only litter of puppies she had. We got her fixed.

  1. Registered breeders here operate a return system for pups that don’t work out. We would like Maya to have a litter and keep one, but not in this house, it’s too small. We have kept in touch with her breeder so can get help and advice should we go that way. Maya is a credit to her breed and breeder too.
However, she is pedigree, so pups would not be free, though we would not be doing it for the money. Thanks for joining in.

    1. We had a mutt, a mixed breed, although there were some pedigreed dogs over the years as well. None of our pedigreed dogs were bred. We didn’t plan on that litter of pups either. She got fixed immediately after that litter when it was safe to do so before she got pregnant again. She was a outdoor dog mostly so if she was in heat she would attract any dogs in the area.
